Clean Up and Maintenance
Saturday, May 15, 2010 • 9 a.m. • Black Brook Preserve
On May 15 at 9 a.m. till whenever the Windham Land Trust needs volunteers to help with the spring clean up and trail maintenance in Black Brook Preserve.
The preserve is located on the Windham Center Road about a quarter of a mile south of Corsetti’s Market. In the preserves are about two and a half miles of wooded trails with bog bridges throughout. This past winter several trees came down, some of the bog bridges moved and some branches have littered the trails.
Volunteers are needed to help with the clean up of trees, fix bridges as needed, move a bench, and clear and repair the trail as needed.
Tools needed: loppers and bucksaws, to clip branches; one sledgehammer, for bridge & bench work; lawn rakes can be used to flick small branches and debris from the trail; and any other hand tools you feel will be useful.
The preserve is wet so be prepared, wear gloves, and bring snacks and water as needed and lunch if you plan to work beyond noon.
Please RSVP to hawkes555@gmail.com if you plan to volunteer and visit, click here to learn about the property and get a map if you’ve never visited the Black Brook Preserve.

October 2009
Free food for Clark Farm campaign callers!
Dear Friends,
I'm writing to let you know of two special phone calling nights next week for the Clark Farm & Forest campaign. As Election Day approaches (only three weeks from next Tuesday!) we must do our utmost to have personal conversations with voters about the bond referendum. To make it easy and fun, we'll be providing pizza, soft drinks, and snacks for all callers next Tuesday, October 13 and Thursday, October 15.
Here are the details:
Location:
Friends Church on Route 202
Time
5:45 PM - Pizza served
6:00 - 8:00 PM - Phone calls to voters (with snack breaks)
If you haven't done calling before, we'll have an instruction sheet and a script you can follow. The calls have been generally positive and the voters have been friendly and happy to hear from us, but there are still many undecided voters out there. This is the best way to give them the information on why it's so important to support this project.
Please forward this e-mail to any friends or family members who might be willing to help out next week. Teenagers are welcome too - they can be great on the phones!
If you have a cell phone with extra minutes please bring it to use; otherwise we will provide you with a phone. And if it's a cool evening, bring an extra sweater to the church. We're hoping for a good turnout, a good time, and major progress on our calls next week!
Will you please let me know if you can make it next Tuesday and/or Thursday? Thank you in advance for your help. Call Priscilla Payne at 892-5787 or e-mail pmpayne@roadrunner.com.

Background
The town of Windham has a one-time opportunity to permanently preserve 574 acres in the heart of town currently owned by Larry and Ann Clark. The Clarks will be retiring in a few years, and as one of Maine’s fastest-growing towns, Windham must act now to see this land forever preserved, rather than developed.
The purchase price of the land and easements is $2.6 million. The town has already received $1.6 million in grants towards the purchase, making the town’s share of the cost $1 million. A $1 million bond to preserve Clark Farm is up for voter approval on November 3.
